The Department of Psychology at WIRAS (Wayanad Institute of Research and Social Studies) observed World Mental Health Day today, focusing on the urgent global theme: "Mental health in humanitarian emergencies." The annual event, held at the college campus, featured an awareness program highlighting the critical need for psychological support during natural disasters, conflicts, and public health crises. The session emphasized that during humanitarian emergencies, mental health is often overlooked, despite nearly one in five individuals in conflict-affected areas experiencing a mental health condition. Faculty members and students from the department led discussions on destigmatizing mental health issues and integrating psychosocial support into all emergency response strategies. The WIRAS team reiterated the message that mental health care is not a luxury but a fundamental component of recovery and resilience in times of catastrophe.
